Twitter Trivia

March 5, 2009 – 10:14 am

Twitter is doing exceptionally well as a micro-blogging site. With some modifications, it will also soar further as a medium of social networking. Yes, it has certain loopholes which need cementing but on other accounts, it is doing rather well. Let’s take up few good, bad, ugly twitter trivia.

In 2007, twitter had a 98 percent uptime. When translated, it comes to a week of cumulative downtime. This is not in keeping with the micro-blogging adventure that has made quite a mark. In fact, twitter got further bad name for itself when the site crashed during the all important MacWorld conference. The ‘fail whale’ message greets the tweeters when there is a crash. The message on display is a dejecting “too many tweets, try again”. In May 2008, the entire technical team of twitter set on the task of implementing certain changes in the infrastructure of twitter to make it stable again, this cut down on active downtime.

Twitter ably marshaled by jack Dorsey till 2007 found one of its key hilarious moments for folklore when jack Dorsey accepting the South by southwest web award for blog said in his speech that “We’d like to thank you in 140 characters or less. And we just did!” For the uninitiated, this humour comes from the fact that Twitter lets users work over a 140 charcter script length. This, by the way, is the largest a micro-blogging site can offer. When you add various emoticons and expressin mediums to it, what you get is plain blogging treat.

Twitter is letting go its Ruby on Rails framework that was supporting its technical structure. Ground is the oft-debated downtime. Twitter will perhaps eke out new twitter resources form Java or PHP, though its present CEO Evan Williams suggested against such shift in his last address.
